Trunk fit

How to measure your trunk for a stroller

Short answer: Measure three things: the floor depth from the back seats to the trunk lip, the narrowest width (usually between the wheel wells), and the height of the trunk opening. Then compare them with the stroller's folded length, width and height, trying it flat and on its side. Leave about an inch of space on every side.

What do you need to measure?

You need a tape measure and about two minutes. Measure in inches, because US stroller makers list folded sizes in inches. Take three measurements:

  1. Depth: along the trunk floor, from the back of the rear seats to the inside of the trunk lip. If your rear seats recline, measure with them upright, the way you'll usually drive.
  2. Width: at the narrowest point, which is usually between the wheel wells, not the widest part of the floor.
  3. Opening height: from the trunk lip up to the lowest point of the opening (the hinge, the latch or the roofline). A stroller has to get through the opening, not just fit inside.

SUV or hatchback? Measure the height to the parcel shelf or cargo cover if you keep it in. In a sedan, the opening height is usually the tightest measurement.

How do you compare your trunk with a stroller's folded size?

Makers list folded size as length × width × height. Those labels describe the stroller, not how it will sit in your car, so try all three ways it could go in:

  • Lying flat: folded length along your depth, width across your width, height against your opening.
  • Turned sideways: folded length across your width instead.
  • On its side or standing: useful for tall, narrow folds in an SUV.

Leave about an inch of space on every side. Folded strollers aren't neat boxes: wheels, handles and canopies stick out, and you'll want to slide it in without scraping your bumper.

Our "Will it fit in my trunk?" calculator does this for you: enter your three measurements, pick a stroller, and it tries every orientation.

Note how much the shape of the fold matters. The UPPAbaby Cruz V3 folds to 17×22.5×32.5 in: tall and slim, and it stands up when folded. The Baby Jogger City Mini GT3 folds to 31.5×25×10.2 in: long but very flat. Two strollers with a similar volume can fit very differently in the same trunk.

What else should you check?

  • What else rides in the trunk. Groceries, a diaper bag or a second stroller all need room too.
  • The seat attached or removed. Some folded sizes are measured with the seat attached, some without. The table notes it where the maker says.
  • Lifting height. A heavy stroller and a high trunk lip are a hard combination. If you lift it several times a day, weight matters as much as size.
  • A bassinet or second seat. These usually come off and need their own space.

What if your trunk is small?

Look at travel and compact strollers, which fold to a fraction of a full-size stroller. The Stokke YOYO3 folds to 20.5×17.3×7.1 in and the Nuna TRVL weighs just 13.6 lb. A car-seat stroller like the Doona+ Car Seat & Stroller needs no trunk space at all, because it rides on the back seat as your baby's car seat. See full-size vs compact strollers for the trade-offs.

Trunk measuring FAQ

Where do I measure trunk width?

At the narrowest point, which is usually between the wheel wells. The floor may be wider further back, but a stroller lying flat has to fit between the wells. If the wells are short, a stroller may sit above them, so measure the width at that height too.

How much space should I leave around a folded stroller?

About an inch on every side. Published folded sizes are the outer box, and wheels, handles and canopies can stick out unevenly. A little room also lets you slide the stroller in without lifting it over everything else in the trunk.

Can a stroller go in the trunk on its side?

Usually, yes. Most folded strollers can lie flat, on their side or stand upright, as long as they're secured and won't slide around. Some, like the UPPAbaby Cruz V3, stand on their own when folded, which suits tall SUV cargo areas.

What's the smallest stroller fold you cover?

The Stokke YOYO3, at 20.5 × 17.3 × 7.1 inches, which Stokke says meets cabin baggage dimensions. The Bugaboo Butterfly 2 Plus and Nuna TRVL also fold small. A car-seat stroller like the Doona+ needs no trunk space, since it rides in the back seat.
