Car seat + stroller
What is a travel system?
Short answer: A travel system is a stroller plus an infant car seat that clicks straight onto it. You lift the car seat out of its base in the car and onto the stroller without unbuckling your baby. It helps most in the first year if you drive often. Some come as a bundle; most premium strollers need adapters.
How does a travel system work?
An infant car seat has two parts: a base that stays installed in your car, and a carrier your baby rides in. With a travel system, the carrier also clicks onto the stroller frame. So the trip goes: unclick the carrier from the base, carry it to the stroller, click it on, and walk. Your baby stays buckled in the whole time.
Some strollers take the car seat directly, with no extra parts. The Nuna TRVL accepts Nuna PIPA series car seats directly, and the UPPAbaby Cruz V3 and UPPAbaby Vista V3 accept UPPAbaby's Mesa and Aria seats directly. Most other pairings need a set of adapters that clip into the stroller frame.
Do you need adapters?
Usually, yes, unless the car seat and stroller come from the same brand and are designed to fit together. Adapters are often sold separately, and prices vary. A few examples from the strollers we cover, as each maker lists them:
- The Baby Jogger City Mini GT3 includes adapters for Baby Jogger and Graco Click Connect seats; adapters for most Nuna seats are extra.
- The Mockingbird Single-to-Double 3.0 uses one $50 Car Seat Adapter that Mockingbird says fits more than 50 infant car seat models.
- The Thule Urban Glide 3 needs a Maxi-Cosi adapter ($69.95) or a universal/Chicco adapter ($79.95).
- The Zoe Twin V3 takes one infant car seat at a time, with adapters at $55 each.
The full list for every stroller we cover is below. Always check that both the stroller maker and the car seat maker list the pairing as compatible.

Is a travel system bundle cheaper?
Sometimes. Brands such as Evenflo, Graco and Joie sell a stroller and an infant car seat together, and the bundle usually costs less than buying the two separately. The Evenflo Pivot Xpand, for example, takes Evenflo's LiteMax and SafeMax seats with no adapter.
Premium brands more often sell the stroller and the car seat separately, so you can pick any compatible seat. That costs more, but it lets you choose the car seat on its own merits: fit in your car, weight, and ease of installation.
When is a travel system worth it?
- Worth it: you drive most days, run lots of short errands, or want to move a sleeping baby from the car without waking them.
- Less useful: you mostly walk or use transit, or your stroller already has a bassinet or a flat recline you'll use instead.
- A shorter window than you'd think: infant car seats are outgrown by weight or height, often within the first year, while the stroller keeps going for years. Choose the stroller for the long run.
How long can a baby stay in a car seat on a stroller?
Keep it to the trip itself. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises against routine sleep in sitting devices such as car seats and strollers, and says to move a baby who falls asleep in one to a firm, flat sleep surface as soon as you can. A car seat on a stroller is handy for errands, but it isn't a place for long naps.
For long walks with a young baby, a bassinet or a seat that the maker approves from birth in a flat recline is the better option. See when a baby can sit in a stroller seat.
What about a car-seat stroller like the Doona+?
The Doona+ Car Seat & Stroller goes one step further: it's an infant car seat with wheels built in. You lift it out of the car, the wheels fold down, and you push. It's very quick and fits narrow spaces, but it has no basket, and your baby outgrows it at 30 lb or 32 in, whichever comes first, per Doona's US site. After that, you'll need a regular stroller.
Before you buy: check that the infant car seat fits your car well. A good stroller fit is no use if the base won't install firmly in your back seat.
Strollers that work well as travel systems
Travel system FAQ
Does any car seat fit any stroller?
No. Each stroller fits certain car seats, either directly or with adapters made for that brand. Check both makers' compatibility lists before you buy. Universal adapters exist for some strollers, but they only cover the car seats their maker lists, not every seat on the market.
Can a newborn ride in a car seat on a stroller?
Yes, that's what a travel system is for, as long as the car seat is rated for your baby's weight and clicked in securely. Keep trips short: pediatricians advise against routine sleep in car seats outside the car, so move a sleeping baby to a flat surface when you arrive.
Do I need a travel system?
No. It's a convenience, not a necessity. It helps most if you drive often in the first year. If you mostly walk, a stroller with a bassinet or a flat-reclining seat may suit you better, and you can still add car seat adapters later if you need them.
How long will I use the car seat on the stroller?
Usually less than a year. Infant car seats are outgrown by weight or height, and the Doona+, for example, goes to 30 lb or 32 in. Once your baby can sit up in the stroller seat, most parents stop clicking the car seat on and use the regular seat instead.
