Baby's first months

When can a baby sit in a stroller seat?

Short answer: Most babies are ready for an upright stroller seat at around 6 months, once they hold their head steady and can sit with a little support. Before that, use a bassinet, a seat your stroller's maker approves from birth in its flattest recline, or an infant car seat on the stroller. Always follow your stroller's manual.

Why do young babies need to lie flat?

Newborns can't hold up their heads. If a young baby is propped upright, their head can slump forward, which can make breathing harder. That's why strollers for young babies either lie flat (a bassinet or a fully reclined seat) or hold the baby in an infant car seat designed to support the head and neck.

Every stroller's manual states its own minimum age or minimum development stage for the seat. Follow it, even if your baby seems ready sooner.

What are the signs a baby is ready for an upright stroller seat?

The CDC's developmental milestones give a useful guide. By about 4 months, most babies hold their head steady without support when held. By about 6 months, most lean on their hands to support themselves when sitting. By about 9 months, most sit without support.

  • Ready: holds their head steady for long stretches, sits with a little support, and pushes up strongly on their arms during tummy time.
  • Not yet: their head still drops forward or sideways when propped up, or they slump down in a seat.

For most babies, that means moving to an upright seat at around 6 months. A semi-reclined position can work a little earlier if the maker allows it. Ask your pediatrician if your baby was born early or you're unsure.

What can a baby use before the stroller seat?

  • A bassinet: the flattest, roomiest option for walks. The Bugaboo Fox 5 Renew includes one, with a 20 lb bassinet limit. Many other strollers sell one separately.
  • A seat approved from birth: some seats recline fully flat and are approved for newborns, sometimes with an infant insert. The UPPAbaby Cruz V3 and Nuna MIXX Next are examples.
  • An infant car seat on the stroller: handy for car trips and errands. Keep stretches short, because pediatricians advise against routine sleep in car seats outside the car. See what a travel system is.
  • A newborn pack: some travel strollers, like the Stokke YOYO3, sell a separate newborn cocoon or pack for the first months.

What does each stroller allow?

This is how each maker describes newborn use and the seat, in its own words where possible. "From birth" ratings often depend on a full recline or an included insert, so read the manual for the details.

Can a baby sleep in a stroller?

Short naps on a walk are normal, but a stroller isn't a safe place for routine or unsupervised sleep. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends moving a baby who falls asleep in a sitting device, including a stroller or car seat, to a firm, flat surface made for sleep as soon as you can. Stay with your baby whenever they sleep in the stroller, and keep the harness on.

When does a child outgrow a stroller seat?

Seats have both weight and height limits. Most of the strollers we cover are rated to about 50 lb, and the Baby Jogger City Mini GT3 goes up to 65 lb. Height limits matter too: once your child's head is above the seat back, or their shoulders are above the top harness slots, they've outgrown it. Our "how long will it last?" calculator estimates when that will be.

Strollers that work from birth

Stroller seat age FAQ

At what age can a baby sit in a stroller without a car seat?

It depends on the stroller. Some seats recline flat and are approved from birth. For an upright seat, most babies are ready at around 6 months, once they hold their head steady and sit with a little support. Your stroller's manual states its minimum age, so follow it.

Can a newborn use a stroller that reclines flat?

Yes, if the maker approves the seat from birth in its flattest position, sometimes with an included infant insert. The UPPAbaby Cruz V3 and Nuna MIXX next are examples. If the manual gives a minimum age, such as 3 or 6 months, use a bassinet or infant car seat until then.

Do I need a bassinet for my stroller?

No, but it's the roomiest option for long walks in the first months. Alternatives are a seat approved from birth, an infant car seat clicked onto the stroller, or a newborn pack. A bassinet is only used for the first few months, until your baby reaches its weight limit or can push up, so weigh its cost against how much you'll walk.

Can my baby face forward in the stroller?

Yes, once they're old enough for the seat. Many parents keep young babies facing them so they can watch them, then turn the seat forward as the baby gets curious. Many full-size strollers, like the UPPAbaby Cruz V3, have a reversible seat; most travel strollers face forward only.
